So, what is Youth In Mind? Why should you get involved? What’s the point? We thought as we get our first videos off the ground it would make sense to explain the background to the project and what our contributors and viewers will gain by taking part.
HeadStart Kernow is a partnership approach to improving health and wellbeing amongst Cornwall’s young people. With research claiming that half of diagnosed lifetime mental ill-health cases begin before the age of 14 and 75% begin before the age of 18, it’s clearly something that deserves full attention. Just like our young people.
Pirate Education & Training was developed to improve skills, raise self-esteem and boost aspirations in Cornwall, through media workshops. We focus on the whole community but a bulk of our work is with young people, helping them make the next steps in life and overcoming barriers.
So, add the two together and this is how Youth In Mind came about! We have worked closely with the HeadStart team to develop a programme which gives our young people a voice. Not only that, but puts them at the heart of what we do. Everything you see in this project has been co-created with teams of young people aged 10 – 16 and they get to choose what subjects they want to focus on, how they treat them, what messages they want to get across and how it is promoted.
Through their voice we hope to give other young people a voice and also highlight the issues facing our young people, the support they need and want and how we as a community can help give them the best start in life.
Oh … and we train them how to produce a whole host of media content. A great set of skills to take forward with them!
