Tips to have a great time online
The online world can be great fun, a place to connect with friends and family and can keep us entertained when we’re bored. But sometimes it can be upsetting too. We’ve got some tips for managing your online space to keep it safe and fun
If you see videos or posts that you find upsetting, try clicking ‘not interested’ or ‘dislike’, or just quickly scroll past content you don’t like. Block or report people who are nasty to you online. Then talk to an adult about what happened. If the people who were nasty are friends in real life, talking to them about why they upset you can make sure it doesn’t happen again.
When you get bored or frustrated with games or apps, a change of scenery can help. Talk to your family, play with pets or go outside for a mood boost.
Too much time online?
If you’re struggling to manage your time online, or find that you can’t stop when you want to be doing other things, it’s not your fault, you’re not alone and help is available.
Start by talking to a parent, carer or adult you trust. They can help you set limits on how much you use devices.
Taking a first step towards change can make you feel better.
Why don't you....?
If you find the time you spend online increases, you could try joining after school clubs where you won’t be as tempted to be online - that could be chess club, school choir or Duke of Edinburgh.
Finally, try putting your phone in bedtime mode to mute your notifications at night. If you’re worried that friends will think you’re ignoring them, tell them about your plan - you might find they want that time away from their devices too!
